Intern Report: Remesia Shields

Tulane University’s Louisiana Research Collection contains a rich collection of materials invaluable to the history of Louisiana.  The vast holdings at LaRC made it my top choice in repositories to complete the internship requirements for my graduate studies at the University of New Orleans.   While at LaRC, I processed the Dr. Boris Weinstein Levy Family Collection and worked with the finding aids of William Beer and George Washington Cable.  I entered the finding aid information into LaRC’s online database, making these finding aids available online.

While processing the Dr. Boris Weinstein Levy Family Collection, I came across amazing photographs including these of the Levy Meat Market and store.  The photographs in this collection are a must see!

In 1889, William Beer became the librarian of the Howard Memorial Library here at Tulane.  In 1896, he took up the position of the first librarian of the New Orleans Public Library.  As librarian of the Howard Library, Beer enriched the library’s Louisiana collection with historical documents, rare books and maps.  Beer’s collection contains correspondence with many literary figures in New Orleans such as George Washington Cable, Grace King, Mollie Moore Davis and Ruth McEnery Stuart.  Documents dealing with the Howard Memorial Library and Beer’s many trips around the world can also be found in this collection.  Consult the online finding aid for more information at: http://specialcollections.tulane.edu/archon/?p=collections/findingaid&id=1320&q=

The George Washington Cable collection contains correspondence with many well-known individuals of Cable’s day including Mark Twain and Andrew Carnegie.  One box of the vast Cable collection is dedicated to the correspondence between Cable and Twain including this telegraph from Samuel Clemens, known as Mark Twain, to George Washington Cable.  For more detailed information concerning these letters, please visit the online finding aid at: http://specialcollections.tulane.edu/archon/?p=collections/findingaid&id=51&q=&rootcontentid=187992#id187992
